ACROTEL MASONRY PAINT
(ANTICARBONATION)ACROTEL MASONRY is a single component high performance ACRYLIC concrete paint and block filler. It is specially formulated to be used as a one-coat system on concrete & masonry substrates for exterior applications. The main function of Acrotel Masonry is to protect steel- reinforced concrete against CO2 (carbonation).
At one time steel-reinforced concrete was considered to be something that would last a long time and did not require protection. However, with the passage of time found (beginning in the 1970’s) that structures built of reinforced concrete were starting to deteriorate quite rapidly, mainly due to carbonation of the concrete. When reinforced concrete is new, the highly alkalinity of concrete protects the steel reinforcement because steel does not corrode at high PH (it is covered with protective oxide film). Over time, CO2 in the atmosphere neutralizes the concrete. When PH falls below 7.0 the concrete is no longer able to protect the steel rebar, thus the steel starts to rust.
Rust occupies more volume than steel, so the inevitable result of prolonged carbonation is that the concrete begins to deteriorate because of the high pressure caused by the build up of rust.
Consequently overall mechanical performance of structure is strongly weakened.
ACROTEL ANTICARBONATION Paint is a carefully formulated coating which protect concrete form carbonation, especially in hot climates. This paint is available in both water-based and solvent based. Solvent base Acrotel Masonry is only recommended for hot, or very cold surface application, on which water-based paint is difficult to apply.
